Desk Extension

Desk Extension

Project Overview

Designed a desk extension system to improve usable workspace in Carleton University’s Minto Centre lecture hall (Minto 2000). The project focused on developing a practical solution to accommodate personal items while maintaining ergonomics and space efficiency. The design emphasized constraint analysis, concept development, and overall manufacturability, supported through detailed CAD modeling in Autodesk Fusion 360.

How was the Project Created?

Followed an iterative design process involving collaborative concept generation, evaluation, and refinement using sketches and constraint tables to guide decision-making. The final concept was developed in Fusion 360, producing detailed general arrangement drawings and a complete bill of materials (BOM) to support implementation. The workflow prioritized clear design documentation, ensuring all components and assembly considerations were well-defined and aligned with project requirements.

Results

Delivered a fully developed and documented desk extension design that meets functional and spatial constraints of the lecture hall environment. The final solution demonstrates strong application of CAD modeling, structured design iteration, and effective translation of requirements into a manufacturable product. The project highlights competency in producing professional engineering documentation, including general arrangement drawings and BOMs, while addressing real-world usability challenges.
